The History of SUAG
Since 1973 SUAG has been helping patients from The North West Regional Spinal injuries Centre in Southport. Formed by therapy staff and friends of the centre, the aim of the group is to befriend and support patients and ex patients.
SUAG's residential, home No 6 Weld Road was opened in 1985 to assist in the independent living of a number of discharged patients who until then, had limited options for life after the centre. Thanks to SUAG's significant fundraising efforts, and with the help of a housing association, the group were able to convert a Victorian house in Birkdale into a residential home, offering a living accommodation for 10 permanent residents, as well as short term accommodation for respite care.
In addition to the group's work with the home, SUAG are actively involved in supporting current in-patients and ex patients of the NWRSlC including funding specialist equipment and social activities.
New members are always welcome - we meet in the Cardiac Rehab centre at Southport District Hospital on the last Wednesday of every month at 8pm.
